inserting data to a table from a txt file.

I'm not new with PHP or mysql but i'm new using the LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE functions. I'm running a basketball league and I would like to know the code to upload a txt file to a mysql table.
is there a way I can skip column from the txt file and add new column with the PHP script?

here is the txt file that I want to upload, I want to remove the Pos and no column and add the ID and team column from another table.

Anyway, to get back to your question, start out by reading the flipping manua: http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/LOAD_DATA.html
it contains working examples of how to do it.

You will have to change your file format to tab-delemited to allow the 'upload', otherwise mysql cannot know where your fields end.

I tried putting the `\' for the tab and it didn't work. I can't change the file format, because that's the way it will come out. I'm sure that there is a way to upload it.

Well, the datafile must somehow delimit the fields.

You may be able to upload the file if all fields have a set length and the length corresponds to the field-length in the database, but I don't think that will work.

Otherwise you'll have to convert the file into CSV format using PHP.

Read the file line-by-line, then cut the columns out using substr(), and then print the data to a new file with comma's between the columns.

Then MySQL can read the data and seperate the columns though the comma's.

Note that you may have to put quotes around the column-data to prevent mysql from choking if there is a comma in the actual data.
