What's in your toolkit ?

I've found that through time I have changed what tools I use (usually depending on what my employer has licenced).
At home I have tools that I always use when building sites, these include Homesite, Dreamweaver , Fireworks, ace_ftp.
At work it slighly different, PHPEdit, MySQL-Front, Fireworks, ws-ftp and some other stuff for other things...

Whats in your toolkit today?

Do you really need all of these? :eek:

My choice hasn't been changed in the last couple of years:
- EditPlus (cracked)
- FAR (free reg)
- phpMyAdmin
- ...what else do you need? aight! nothing else... :rolleyes:

Mine is something like: Fireworks, EditPlus, Dreamweaver, MySQLFront (kind of a phpMyAdmin but for windows), PHP Manual and of course a link on my desktop to a certain top PHP developers forum...

not to crap, but i dont see how anyone can use dreamweaver or any other wysiwyg editor...just doesn't click for me. shrug though for adding flash, i suppose its good enough, that would have to be the only thing i ever used it for.

Well dreamweaver certainly does have limited uses for programmers (althouth MX may be slighly better as a coding environment). Personaly I use dreamweaver for things like HTML validation - (you know when you have a very large PHP script that dynamically builds large complex table structures, and it looks funny on the screen) - well paste the browsers HTML output into dreamweaver and it highlights the HTML errors. This saves lots of time in PHP debugging. I wouldn't dream (hehe) of using dreamweaver to actualy produce any code, that would just be asking for trouble (dont know about MX).

As far as im aware dreamweaver MX is a rebuild that has a updated Allaire Homesite coding environment, and a wysiwyg similair to old dreamweaver (although the Adobe guys stoped the floating menu things from being used due to copyright reasons). Ive also heard it doesn't mess with your hand typed code (although im not convinced).

I'll just stick with PHP Edit for now though !!🙂

Never thought about it for validation, I don't usually have many errors, and if i do i find em rather quick...so iunno. Also you can always get it validated with w3c 😃 ... but i can see how it would come in handy for your means., ill stick with notepad tho 😃

I'm responsible for much more than php with our website - php is but a small cog in my big "work" wheel 🙂 - hence the other apps. I use Dreamweaver to integrate all the facets of the site- but not to code php. That's what notepad is for.

Ok, here's a bit of a slant on the topic, how do you go about creating your sites?

See, I start with EditPlus and code the site and get it working and get it kinda looking how I want it to look. I use Fireworks for the graphics (duh! of course) and then I tweak with Dreamweaver to get it looking just how I want it. So, in answer to Nanoblaze's penultimate post, I do all my PHP and most of HTML (I don't use JavaScript or DHTML) in EditPlus and only use Dreamweaver for that final tweaking.

Site creation for me goes in this order,

Idea drawn up in notepad ( if its something somewhat large anyhow )

Idea translated into php/html in another instance of notepad,

Graphics, if needed usually created in photoshop

Idea tested for bugs, then goes live, 🙂

I guess I'm more of a visual person when it comes to creating my websites. I use a lot of remedial skills LOL - literally list all of the info and rough sketches of any graphics on pen and paper then literally cut them out and move them around on a clean sheet until I get the right look that I want (kind of like moving furniture around on paper before actually doing it LOL). Then tape everything down and I'm set.

Then I use Photoshop for the graphics.

Then I start a blank template in Dreamweaver, and start inserting all my elements.

For me, PHP comes last - I code it in notepad, drop it in dreamweaver where it belongs on the page and then save, upload and test for looks and functionality.

I used to code everything (HTML included) in notepad, but after using dreamweaver I guess I'm spoiled 🙂

Well, it really depends on what im doing.
I usualy start with PHP Edit and code the whole thing HTML, JavaScript and PHP. When I need to start adding graphics I create them in fireworks, then coded them in PHP Edit.

If the page is just HTML and has lots of pretty graphics, then I may use dreamweaver to build it so I can get the look corrrect. Then once done I open it in PHP Edit and strip out about 50% of the mince created by dreamweaver.

I test evrything locally first (PHP and MySQL) then upload to a Development Server and test, when it all fine and dandy it goes live.

Since Starfleet gave me the latest "NewThought" implant, I just think of what I want, drive to the server location, forcibly enter the building late at night, and plug my transdermal phalangeal tactile interface directly into the serial port.....

'New Thought' implant !!, don't you know thats old technology theses days?, I mean, ive had the latest 'Pre Thought' upgrade. Were you dont even need to think, it accurately guesses what your next thought would be and automatically signals the Servers to make the nessesary changes, without even leaving you rest chambers....😃

EditPlus(Used only when those stupid errors come and wanna find the line without wasting hours of my little precious life counting lines.)
Photoshop - Speaks for itself
NotePad. - When i feel smart or if its such an easy thing that i dont require the need to count lines.
