php.ini - modifying for sessions

hello-

specs: solaris 8, php 4.2.3, apache 2.042

is it necessary to modify the .ini file for basic session usage? i have been unable to store session variables for some reason and wonder if it's because

session.save_path = /tmp

--and I have not created a /usr/local/lib/tmp directory.

my understanding was that no mods were necessary for basic usage.

Check that the uid the web server runs under has privilege to access the /tmp directory (or change the setting to point to a directory Apache can access).
