Mysql socket problem

We are using virtual hosting for the websites.
Today suddenly all our websites broke

The error was

Warning:MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'

Warning: MySQL: A link to the server could not be established
can anybody help

is the socket still there? I kept mine in /tmp for a while, but it got deleted randomly when the admins cleaned the /tmp directory.

you can edit your .my.cnf and safe_mysqld files to place the socket in a different location. I like to keep mine in my home directory, but not my public_html root.
