simple use of md5()

i got this:

$txt="[e-mail]";
$crypted=md5($txt);
echo $crypted;

but is there any way to restore the original string??, something like this:

$txt="[e-mail]";
$crypted=md5($txt);
echo $crypted;
$txt=ANYFUCTIONTODECRYPTMD5($crypt);
echo $txt;

You never changed $txt.. so $txt will still show the original string. 🙂

yeah, i agree the $txt remains..

Just curious, is there anything to get back the value if it was however changed after being 'md5'....

Nope -

MD5 is a one way algorithm. It can't be decrypted but will return true if the exact string that was used to create it is used in the comparison.

You probably already know this but there are several other functions which can be used to encrypt then decrypt data. See the mcrypt section in the manual.

I read into that and was trying to do the same thing you were doing about 2 months ago..

I had some data that was md5()ed and I wanted to get the original data..But I couldn't 🙁

thanks mikeatrpi and all of u guys! ive tried what us suggested n it works fine. now all my passwords are md5-encrypted 😃
