Using <textarea> within forms </textarea>

Is there any way to tidy up the string of potentially long text within a textarea? Normally it all comes out un-edited and just in one long string, it would be good if I could somehow tidy this up a bit.

The information will be going into a database which is viewed in a totally seperate application.

What do you mean by 'tidy up'? Do you want to add HTML?Replace returns with break tags? Add formatting (bold, italic, etc.)?
