Replace line in text file

I am trying to replace a line in a text file. The file is small (50-100 lines) and contains username : password pairs. I can identify the line based on the username. Is there a way I can read the file in to a variable and use preg_replace or do I have to read the file into an array and loop through that? I have tried readfile without success.

Yes, if you want to read a simple username : passwd file line by line, then an easy way would be to put in an array using file() and then looping through the array searching for the username with whatever search function/regex you like.

You'll have to read the entire file and then rewrite it. If you're concerned about memory, one way to improve it is reading line by line, and then writing to a temporary file. When you're done reading and writing, delete the original file and rename the temporary file.
