C or PHP/MySQL ?

would it be better to use a C based program or PHP/MySQL script to power a website that would see 25,000 visits a day ? (both scripts/programs do the same thing)

note:

ive always used php/mysql for everything but people have been trying to scare me out of using it to run a bigger site. my current site is like 7k/day with php/mysql and it runs fine.

I would say that it ultimately depends on the # of records in the DB, but I don't see a problem with php/mysql.

Put it this way, if commericial sites use it for thousands of visits a day then it is reliable. MySQL is a robust system so it should be good with large visits. You can get software to test how websites perform under stress.

You also have to look at the how complex your database will end up being. mysql is excellent for sites that do a lot of lookups but relativily little database posting. It's great for shopping cart type sites.

However, if you have many interconnected tables that are constantly being updated then things like transactions and stored procedures become pretty handy. And having nested select statements would be really nice.

mysql 4.x will start to address some of these issues but it's still still in beta.

well the database isnt very table intensive, there will probably be only a few hundred entries in the db. but it will require alot of posting data from the database to the client and updating its own internal records.
