Escape a string

Hi. How can i properly escape the following line of code?

$line = str_replace("<%$var_list[$i]%>",$$var_list[$i],$line);

The code runs ok but it gives me an error in this line. It's not in $$var_list[$i] as i tried it with ${$var_list[$i]}
It's somewhere in "<%$var_list[$i]%>" and i can't find out how i can do it.

Well, the only thing that needs to be escaped there is the '$', but I don't know if you want to escape that, or want to use the variable...

$$var_list[$i]
Are you sure that's not wrong? PHP doesn't know if you mean:
${$var_list[$i]}
or
{$$var_list}[1]
so yeah, there is an error there, too.
