Hello there,

I need to:

open image
resize it (make a thumbnail)
keep original
save thumbnail to the same directory where is original

My question is:
Is GNU Image library from http://www.boutell.com/gd/ automaticaly distributed with PHP 4.2.0 and above?
Do I need to use this library or there is also alternative?

Note: Since PHP 4.3 there is a bundled version of the GD lib. This bundled version has some additional features like alpha blending, and should be used in preference to the external library since it's codebase is better maintained and more stable.

You'll be wanting to use some image processing library. There are alternatives (Imagemagick is often touted) but gd_lib is the only one that has inbuilt PHP support (though I understand there are some third-party PHP extensions to support imagemagick).

Is there some showstopping reason why you can't get a copy of gd_lib from http://www.boutell.com/gd/ and install it?

[Note. All the above applies to the Unix version. The Windows version has a version of gd_lib bundled.]

i'm doing that using ImageMagick (under Unix, but also windows works) in command-line-calls, because ImageMagick supports anti-aliasing for nicer thumbnails.

sample-call:
$my_org_img = "/imagestore/origfile.jpeg";
passthru("convert ".$my_org_img." -resize 100x100 ".$my_org_img.".100.jpg");

this results in an thumbnail fitting into a 100x100 pix box, named like the originial extended by ".100.jpg".

So does gd_lib since v2; I've been looking in to using the GIMP.

i've upgraded to 4.3.0 in windows, and am aware that the GD library is bundled with said version of php. however, for the life of me, i am not aware and cannot find any support on how to get it to work. any suggestions?
