I dunno. Given the volume of search returns, (many of which were actual failed installations, D'OH!), and the fact that the config file is the only thing you change, i have to say that's the place to keep looking.
The current documentation says exactly the same thing.
Are you running locally or on remote server? Make sure not to edit with WordPad or something, and if you're uploading to server w/FTP, make sure it transfers the code in ASCII mode.
EDIT: I went and looked at some of those errors. It isn't at all exclusive to phpMyAdmin, it looks like a common problem with include files. Any extraneous information outside of the php tags is interpreted as a header. I think.
