ereg_replace() problem

Hi, I keep getting the follwing error when attempting a replace:
REG_BADRPT:orepetition-operator operand invalid

My line is this:

$output = ereg_replace('(content)',$content,$tmplt);

where $content and $tmplt contain blobs from my db.

Can someone enlighten me as to my error please?

What are the asterisks for? I think you need to escape them.

Hi Diego.
You are quite right.

I have just discovered my errors - two of them.

1. It is 2 am here in the UK and I should be in bed.
2. Because of 1, and a severe lack of sleep this week, I should have noticed that I should be using str_replace() instead.

The asterisks are there because they are delimiters to denote a template directive which needs to be replaced by content stored in a db.
