how to write a file replacing some string

Hello ,

I have to open a file on /home/user/setting.php
and replace these 2 lines (contained on setting.php)

$user = "";
$pass = "";

with

$user = "user";
$pass = "pass";

and write the file .

I know how to use fopen and fwrite but what to do to replace
$user= ""; with $user= "user"; and $pass= ""; with $pass = "pass"; inside the file /home/user/setting.php ?

this is a place to discuss php coding , if you don't want that you can go otherplaces . if I placed this question here is because I am trying to do that from several hours without success .
and remember , any help offered to me (or anyone ) is an help given to all the forum . Again , if you don't like this forum you can go away .All we know that exist a php manual ....we are here to find a possible help or if possible to provide help .

in plain english:

$code = implode('', file('code.txt'));
$code = preg_replace('/\$user *= *"([^"]*)";/', 'new user name', $code);

the regexp could fail, but at least you've got the idea.

You're of course welcome to post questions to message boards, but so long as the answers to those questions are obviously found in the manual, people are going to respond by posting pointers to the manual.

This is not a complicated problem, and if you read the section of the manual that deals with string manipulation functions, you will easily find the function that replaces substrings within a string.

Equally importantly, you'll become familiar with how the manual is laid out and what type of other functions are available. That will help you solve subsequent problems yourself. Understanding can be more valuable than simple answers.
