OK you can yawn - but I'm really confused about the basics. How on earth do I get PHP, zend optimiser and MySQL onto a hosted server? Words of one syllable and no jargon please - I've just spent four hours trying to work out the instructions for loading an online website constructor and failed at the first hurdle of getting the above up and running.

The server admin has to either install it, or enable it on your account. You cannot do it yourself.
If only I'd asked earlier, I'd have saved myself all that pain - unfortunately, the help desk is closed for Xmas - so I guess I'm just going to have to be patient.
