how can i make it NOT parse HTML?

if i have an fopen or something like that and i want to edit a file lets say, to edit it properly i'd have to have it not parse the HTML displayed but how would i go about in doing that?

sort of like this forum really, i can post a bunch of html stuff but it wont be parsed by the browser at all.

Replace '<' by <

e.g.

if the file has
<html>
your output would be
<html>

This can be accomplished with str_replace.

str_replace() is not the best solution for this issue.
everything could be done with a single call to htmlspecialchars() or htmlentities().
