Your site is great, a bunch of boards for every subject marked clear. I noticed that you had 1 forum for Windows, 1 for Linux and Unix....but none for Mac OS :eek:

Thats a good point. Although im not a huge Mac Fan. They do have there advantages over PC's just like PC's have there advantages over Macs

PC's have an advantage over mac in compatibility. But to outperform a mac, I think a PC has to get rid of Windows. Overall, I think an average PC running a P4 (lets say a Dell) up against a new iMac, the iMac has all the advantages except for compatibility.

Really though, we have a forum for Windows, Linux...why not MacOS? And since Steve Jobs has been back for Apple, sales have been getting better, not worse, and more and more people go to Linux...and leave Windows.

Mac's are good for somethings. But for what most people wanna do with Computers.

Now thinking who actually uses Mac's

As an estimate i would say 20% would use a Mac. Most of that 20% is lifted by Schools.

Yes, I'm getting an iBook. I just hope installation for Apache and PHP won't be too hard. As we all know, finding software for MacOS will be a hassle. If I can't, I'll probably just get a PC and switch to Mandrake Linux. Alot more people are switching these days though. The new MacOS X is very impressive. As for windows 🙁 I could throw up using it. Mine went strong for a few months, now it can barely shutdown!

If this was a few years ago. I would have said thats a joke. Windows is quite ok.

Now that everyone or well hopefully many on these forums should know is that Microsoft are only after money. And in doing this there quality(Whatever they had) is now gone. Now i would probably bag out the flaws in Mac OS but ive never actually used it. Ive used the old Mac system. Umm wait it was Mac OS i fogot what version. But i absolutely hated it. The screen was so boring.

Yes, before Jobs was in...and I tell you, if was awful. It wasn't stable either. Back then, basically you could only use Windows to get something down. Now, the Apple OS X screen changes while doing work...it's to die for. I still haven't bought my computer yet, I'm thinking about a Apple iBook or IBM Thinkpad R. I've heard that Apace/PHP/MySQL come with Mac OS X, is this true? :rolleyes:

As for Windows, I've read that Gates actually didn't create Windows...he bought from a rival for $80,000. As for Gates after money, he's been copying Steve Jobs since we can all remember. Note all the lawsuites.

Yes your PHP/Mysql etc with Mac OS does come with it unless otherwise stated by the supplier. I would ask what actually comes with it and a test go at a computer exactly the same with the same programs that you are getting.

Make sure you know what programs should be on it. How they work on the Mac etc
The big one i see is actually knowing what your doing on it. Where everything is.
Unlike Mac Windows XP is a real bugger. As i think stated in a few agruments about XP is that of files been hidden.

Are there a lot of devs on Mac OSX and PHP? I've never heard of anyone to be truthful. I don't really want to add a forum that won't have a page 2.

It should be fair though, since you have a Linux and Windows forum...shouldn't you have for for a MacOS. Afterall, they're are growing Mac users. :rolleyes:

Is it that hard? If it doesn't have a page 2...just leave it. As long as you get 1 or 2 posts...1 or 2 people have been helped 😃

Not sure about your information there Kenneth an iMac will not outperform a P4. The G4 line competes nicely but most of the iMac crap has the old G3 and gets squashed in application benchmarks (including the PhotoShop stuff). And the reason you don't hear of many devs on MacOSX is because they took a good idea and broke it. It's a great backend, being BSD based means it's solid, but then they made things install in wierd directories that no other BSD system uses. They also took away a lot of the benefits of having *nix by disabling the root user by default and allowing a normal admin user to create the root user and mess with it's properties. So basically all you end up with is an opensource turned proprietary OS with a pretty interface, hmmm.. that's sounds familiar. Another funny little note on MacOSX it doesn't come with MySQL but yet it comes default with a MySQL user, so I'd say they have some things to work out behind the scenes now that they have Aqua all prettied up.

I've been developing PHP on Mac osX for over a year now and it is a dream. Will never go back.

There is no osX forum because there are no problems (ha!)

I'm typing to you on my new iBOOK. As soon as I install PHP/Apace, or whatever I need.

I still don't know what OSX has. Do I need to install Apace, PHP, and MYSQL? OR does Apace already come with OSX? ALl I need is to get PHP and later, MYSQL right?

Anways, I'll witness the joy of webdevelopment on my Mac soon. I've heard it's good for this kind of work.

When you turn on Sharing in the system prefs, you are starting Apache

Look around and you'll find a double-click install for mySQL

Edit the apache config file to enable PHP and you are set.

Remember, OS X is a full unix install. Use the terminal to start emacs or try BBEdit.

I have a book on installing on doing PHP. It tells how to install PHP and Apace etc. in a UnixOS. Which counts as MacOSX right? So since my OS already comes with Apache and mySQL, all I have to do was follow previous instructions given to me to install PHP, and I'm set for coding right? Anyways, I'm going to continue my questions at the newbie forum so this won't seem off-topic.

Oh, and for most who say that a new Mac G4 can't beat out an intel P4....your kidding. Amd Athlon's are known to be faster than intell, don't be fooled by the commericials and names....their as bad as Windows.🙂
