Selecting limited # of characters from a row

how can i select a limited # of characters from a row?

i have text based articles in a database stored as a text blob. i'd like to display the first 100-200 characters of each article. then, i'd include a link to read the entire article.

i can display the whole article just fine, i just can't figure out how to display only the first 100 characters of the row.
