resize an image before uploading to m,y server

Does anyone know how to resize an image that a user submits before it is uploaded to my server...and also create a thubnail of the image as well. I need this so when my users upload there images one thumbnail will feature on the results page then when clicked goes to a details page where the larger images and profile details are held.

I have spent days trying to do this with no luck can anyone help me write some code to do this?

I am a newb so please try and help in anyway you can.

use imagemagick for this.

my host doesnt support imagemagic only gd do you know of any ways using gd?
