Export to MS Access or Excel File?

I build a PHP and MySQL application in Linux system.I want to generate a Access or Excel file from MySQL and downlaod it from web page with web interface.do you think PHP in Linux can do this?the problem is Linux system do not support Access or Excel.

Do you think other language( like Java etc )can do this.Thanks

and let the download it then have the user import this into the application...

java and php could do this direct export but only on a windows system using [man]COM[/man] funtionality...

the other option is that you write a COM object to do the work on the users system, though that involves having the user trust you enough to be willing to do this

If you want to consider additional flexability, you might consider simply outputing the result as a csv (comma seperated value) text file.

That will allow your user to import it easily into almost any application, including both M$Acces and Excel or any of the Star/Open applications.

Added benefits;
- typically very fast generation
- compact and quick downloads
- coding simplicity

you simply loop through all your data separating fields by commas and rows by lines -

while ($row=mysql_fetch_row($result)) {
echo $row[0] . ',' . $row[1] . ',' $row[2] . "\n";
}
