I personally suggest the PHP4 Bible.
While this book did help my cut my PHP teeth, I can say that the one thing that has taught me the most is downloading the PHP CHM (Compiled Help Format) Doc file from here. As most any PHP developer will probably tell you, the docs are an essential source of information. Get the extended CHM if you decide to download it, as it has added user comments.
