Can anyone point me to a quick tutorial on doing basic file input/output?

You must be talking about text files. fopen, fwrite, fget, fclose is what you should be looking at as well as fput.

In addition to what planetsim said, look at those functions in the PHP manual at http://www.php.net/download-docs.php. If you are a Windows user, I suggest downloading the Extended CHM version. The PHP docs are the most useful thing in the world.
