Explode on more than one character...

Is there a way to perform an explode on more than one functions? Regexp only allows for checking characters; so does explode & split. Is there a way of doing this?

What I meant is that in regexp you can't go [~(test)] or anything like that (what I'm trying to do is locate something like this: This is <<< a test!. I can't easily locate that in Regexp because I'd need to look for a group of characters that are do not form </

Yes, but that Regexp will also incorrectly match This is a test!Test two!

What I mean is I need it to go like this (in English):

Match a less-than sign followed by a b followed by a greater than sign, followed by a combination of zero or more characters that doesn't contain the pattern of a less than sign, followed by a forward slash, followed by a b, followed by a greater than sign, and that combination followed by a less than sign, followed by a forward slash, followed by a b, followed by a greater than sign.

first I thought lookaheads might be what you are after, but sorry, I can't make much of your example.

perhaps it would help to know what you need it for, and maybe give a more detailed example and indicate something like "this should be matched from here to here" and "this shouldn't be matched because ...".

In Regexp, there's only one way to say "don't match this".

If you don't want to match b, then you go [~b] in the Regexp. However, if you put in [~], then it'll use anything that isn't a <, b or >. That's not what I'm looking for.

ok, then lookaheads actually may be useful.

instead of [^] (I've never seen the ~ in negated character classes), you'd use (?!).

note that this doesn't consumes any characters, it only requires that whatever follows in the pattern is not .
