subdomains and vhosts

I want to configure virtual hosts so that I can create new and unlimited subdomains simply by creating a new directory in the file system. I know this is possible, because my own webhost (ModWest.com) has configured their virtual hosts like this. I have tried asking them, but was just referred to the Apache docs.

EXAMPLE

/var/www/html/www/index.html
can be accessed at
http://www.domain.com/index.html

/var/www/html/sub1/index.html
can be accessed at
http://sub1.domain.com/index.html

/var/www/html/sub2/index.html
can be accessed at

http://sub2.domain.com/index.html

I have looked at the Apache docs on mod_vhost_alias, but haven't found a concrete example of what I am looking for. If anyone has done something similar, I would appreciate any help you could give.

there is a code snipplet posted on this site titled "Faking real Virtual Hosts". I think thats teh ideal solution for you, with some modification ofcourse. One key thing to remember is that you need to have ur DNS entries setup so that <ANYTHING>.yourdomain.com will point to ur ip address, for the script to work. If you own your own your own DNS server, it's done by creating a CNAME record with the value *.yourdomain.com.

hand's example works, but I was looking for something a little more dynamic. I want the process of creating a new subdomain as easy as creating a new directory. That way I don't have to edit the httpd.conf and bounce the server each time. I'm thinking mod_rewrite is going to be useful for this.

rohithmr, I searched all the snippets on the PHPBuilder site, but could not find one about faking real virtual hosts. If it isn't too much trouble, could you provide a link?

ok i guess they took down that article. But newayz heres a copy. Since hand's solution works Im pretty sure you kno what ur doin and n u actually have *.yourdomain.com pointing to ur ip.

you can modify this script to actually check if a directory exsits b4 redirecting to that directory, so that ppl won't get a 401 File NOt found message.

P.S: The script provided has a very little chance of working cuz it needs that Register GLobals to be turned ON and also the header() is completely wrong. But if u want ne help fixin it, jus ask
