Running make from PHP

Can make be run from PHP? I have tried doing

exec ("/pathtodir/make");

and it doesn't seem to run. Are there parameters I need to include to make this work from PHP?

Ya, make. When you are installing software. Run configs or whatever then do:
make

The command is literally just "make" from the command line.

In this case it is creating the data.cdb file from the data file for djbdns (tinydns). It's the DNS server I use. I am creating a dynamic DNS system.

Do you get any errors? Can you exec() other commands successfully? You might want to catch the output by assigning it to a variable to see exactly what's going on (maybe there are actually problems with the make).

Aha! I found at least part of the problem. How do I run make so that it uses a makefile in a specified directory? If I do
/pathtodir/make

it returns command not found. So I want to run make as if I were in a given directory. How can I do that?

This is becoming more of a Unix admin question that PHP, but I figured I'd check. The -I flag doesn't seem to be working for make. If I do:
make -I /pathtodir
it still runs as if it were running from my current directory. Am I missing something in the syntax?
