Check if human and kick the robot!

Hi, on Hotmail.Com Sign Up they have this thing that makes you enter a code to check if your human or bot. I downloaded the one in the Code Library but it is a .zip file that won't extract. So I thought that maybe it was the .zip file type that goes on the web, but unfortuantely my web server doesn't support them. I need somethig that is .php and if needed I have the GD library... Thanks in advance!

I cannot see how someone can tell if its a human or a bot loging in a web page...

I suppose the only way could be to monitor the reaction timing. If the server asks you for a name and password and your response is less than half a second then you are probably a bot ... not human

I would approach this either with session variables or save the login times and IP (using $REMOTE_ADDR) of clients in a database. If I saw the same IP in a time smaller than half a second I'd ban the client.

Check Hotmail.Com signup form. It makes you enter a code... (and that code can't be found as plain text in the page source NOR can that code be read by ocr software)

The one's I've seen just put up an image (probably a randomly selected link into a directory with a handful of files). A human can see the text but all a bot sees is a gif or jpeg.
