Why is this causing an error?

i=i+1;

I am using this to count a loop and i get this error

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '=' in /home/httpd/html/featureditems.php on line 8

When i remove this i no longer get the error. So what am i doing wrong here?

NM i'm a retard.. Its suppost to have the $ in font of it...

you could also use $i++;
