Setting up my MSSQL database

Hello, I'm new to both PHP and MS SQL, and I am trying to set up PHPBB forums on my site.

I am paying for a MSSQL database on my server Readyhosting, but I have no idea how to connect to it or even get it to the point where my PHPBB forums can use it. I got an e-mail with lots of information about my database but I have no idea how to use it or even what it means.

Is there a program I need to use to set everything up?

You can connect to the db with this.

$db = mysql_connect("host","username","password");
mysql_select_db("db name",$db);

?>

mysql also has a gui console that you can that you can download from mysql.com, for working with your databases. It's under the download link.

Can I connect to it just using ODBC? And if so... how?

OK scratch ODBC, its to slow with MS SQL 2000. But yea... anyone?

Pretty much like the first poster said, just different function names 🙂

You will need the server name or ip, a username, and a password, which your hosting people should have given you.

For the actual commands and syntax, do a search for mssql in the function list at php.net.

ok well I emailed my server for that info, which I lost. And I will hopefully be able to set this all up with the install file for my forums. But I just wanted to know if there was something I had to set up first. Thanks though, I shall try this.

As far as setup, your version of php must be able to handle mssql. This means a painful recompile (I couldn't get it working) process for php/apache/etc to make it mssql aware in *nix. For a win32 server, it is as simple as chainging the ini file and copying a dll into the proper place.
