Sorting MYSQL data by MONTH

Hi,

I have a news table with entries in different categories each with a timestamp field. My default variable for my table is $tab

I need code to be able to break down the listings by categories with a separate heading for each category (not repeated until the next category) and I also need to break down each listing by month. Eg. Categories are Local News, Other News and I would want to be able to have an archive page that a user can click to find all January 2003 articles under a category, or even a wider period like say 6 months.

It would be good if this could all be done dynamically so I don't have to code 12 seperate pages for each month and/or category, if you catch my drift.

How can I do this simply and effectively? Sorry for the newb-ness.

MySQL has a MONTH() function which you can use in a select clause, so something like

$month = $_POST['month'];
$category = $_POST['category'];

$sql = "select * from $tab where category='$category' and MONTH(datefield) = $month";

should extract the data you want.
