\n new line

Greetings,

I must admit, php is one the more frustrating lanugages I have ever run accross.

I cannot get the newline escape "\n" to output a new line on the screen.

I have even cut and paste this directly from the tutorails and even it doesn't work.

<?php
echo "This spans\nmultiple lines. The newlines will be\noutput as well.";
?>

IE 6.0 Mozilla 1.2.1 PHP 4.2.3

$string = str_replace("\n"," ",$string);

You might want to try this function too.
newline_to_br()

You can also use the alias nl2br()

Or...better yet...forget \n and just use

I mannually replaced \n with at it worked.

Are the tutorails posted even worth effort?

So far, they have not mentioned much on register_globals, and am I to assume \n is outdated??

and \n are used for different things. Use when you are outputting HTML (displaying the results of a db query, printing a message on a web page, etc.). Us \n in email messages and other non-webpage situations where you need a line break.

I had this problem as well. I figured out the whole BR thing before Christmas.. came back -forgot, and was getting rather frustrated with \n.

Hi. I'm a complete newbie to PHP. I want to make new lines in my echoed HTML so all of it isn't written on the same line. I think the answer is in this thread but I don't get it.

If I understand you correctly, you are generating HTML with PHP and you want the actual HTML code (not just the fully-rendered web page) to have line breaks instead of everything being on one line. In that case, \n will work.

the basic ecsape character for new line in code is \n

echo "Hello\nworld"

should ouput as 2 lines

To have it work on the screen requires:

echo "hello world"

As far as I can tell, the \n must work in file outputs only

If you are using print() you can put the linebreaks in the output.

Such as:

print "<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
</head>";

outputs as:

even spaces and tabs will translated properly

Kind of an interesting fact... you can use \n in attribute tags such as

and when you do the hover over the link it displays as

The only thing is that this will only output properly in IE. Netscape and other browsers can't interpret it properly and will show the box of confusion!

That's a bit diiferent. I'm really trying to keep browser compliant with IE 6.0 and Mozilla 1.2.1. Most of my customers are not very internet savy anfd that's enough to drive them nuts -David
