GD with GIF support and problems with .BMP?

I run a web site that has image uploading as a major feature of the site. I notice that a lot of people want to upload other image types, .PNG, .BMP, .GIF, etc... The normal GD that's included with PHP includes JPG, PNG, and BMP, but GIF was stripped out. I also read everywhere about all these patches for this and that to make GD work with GIFs. Does anyone actually have a link to an already patched .dll for windows? I haven't found one anywhere.

My other question is, when I go to resize a .bmp (for thumbnails) it always comes out blank as if the original image was null. Am I the only one with this problem? Any ideas?

You will never see .GIF supported in the GD library, as then the GD library would have to charge a fee. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not going to tell you you shouldn't use .GIF, but if you want to be legally-abiding, use .PNG. If you still want "animated" images, you can look into the lesser-known .MNG, which will be the replacemant for the animated .GIF in the near future.

I'm not looking to redistribute .GIFs or anything, I just want to be able to accept them as an upload. Some people have images as GIFs already and aren't exactly bright enough to convert them, so I use my upload script to do it for them. As of now it converts whatever image the user uploads into a jpeg. I personally don't want GIFs for any reason other than to expand my web site's capabilities. I was thinking maybe I could just write a small tutorial for how to convert them and maybe have a link to a small program for anyone to use... Any suggestions on that?

I understand you don't plan on redistributing the .GIF images your users may submit, but I'm just saying that the GD image library doesn't, and will never support the .GIF file extension. If your users want to submit images, set up MIME restrictions, and if they don't care to take the time to convert, don't worry about it.
