Server address

What is the function or header to get the server address? I run my scripts locally, but I don't have a static IP address, and I use absolute URLs. I need to figure out the IP address of the server. How would I do that?

Are you on Windows? If so, just load up the command prompt and type (replace php.net) with your domain. The ip is the one in brackets [64.246.30.37].

C:>ping php.net

Pinging php.net [64.246.30.37] with 32 bytes of data:

If you're talking about hosting your site without a static IP, you're out of luck. That can't be done. Once your IP changes, there's no way to calculate what it's changed to in regards to DNS translation. However, I'm not sure if this is what you're asking...

No, i want to just find my IP address in PHP. I run script locally for testing, but i need to get my IP address for it. I know how to check my IP address, but I want PHP to do it so it will change the URLs in my script.

ah, I see.

If you're the only one looking at the scripts, and you're doing it from your own computer, all you need is "http://localhost/phpscript.php". I do see why you'd want to do this, though. However, I'm not sure how.

Well, I'm not the only one. I sometimes like to show my friends what I am doing. I also don't want to change a whole lot when I change to a different server, not mine. So finding out the address would be alot easier.

You could simply always use relative pathnames instead of full ones. If everything is in your htdocs folder, all you'd need to do to specifiy differently is " ../newfolder", or "/newfolder", etc.

I don't think you should ever really have to use a full address that requires the IP. Though I'm sure you probably have one of those situations right now, which is why you're asking, so I'll be quiet now 🙂

You shouldn't need IP addresses, you should be using relative paths. I didn't know you wanted PHP to get the IP. If you're still set on doing it this way, have a look at gethostbyname()

In the root folder, I have some files. I have a global folder which contains headers, footers, etc.. I also have a members folder, which contains pages for after the user is logged in. All three folders contain files that need to use files in the global folder. So using ../global wont work in all cases, niether will /global, since the root folder uses global files too.
