The counter is good, but doesn't show in html

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting a php counter I made to show up in the html of a host site. Is there a trick to this? I tried inserting

into the body but it's not showing (just the broken link graphic). If I click the graphic, I hop right over to the counter and it's loading perfectly.

I've tried tweaking this a number of different ways, including:
— placing the entire script of the php file into the body of the html
— using <IMG SRC=
— using a href="
— using include ("http://
but I'm clearly out of my league here. This has to go into an EBay auction description, so that may or may not influence which route I have to use.

I'm a newbie at this. But my counter works perfectly; I just can't figure how to get it into an html document. Help?

ok... try this then:

just replace the height and width sizes to your counter proper size

Internet Explorer 5 and 6 ... and the latest Netscape Navigator will see the iframe
the older versions will the the "Click here to see the counter" link

When you use an IMG tag in your html, the browser tries to display the supplied path (http://www.myisp.com/myhomepage/mydirectory/counter.php) as an image. Your problem here is that your reference is a php script and not an image. You'll need to include your script using include() or require().

However, does Ebay allow you to include an external php script?

Altexis, quick question before I attempt this:

The script is generating a series of gif images (each a number, also a comma) writing to a little flat ~.dat file. I thought about this issue — graphic size — and didn't know quite how to approach it <grin>. I can't know the exact size because it's assembling an unknown number of integers. Nooooooow . . . I suppose I could be defeatist; presume that there will always be under 1,000 people looking at my R.A. Salvatore book for sale; and fix the dimensions to allow for a width of 3 of the gifs (or even more uncertain and allow for two heh heh), but . . . how the hell DO I deal with this? I mean, who am I to not dream heh heh. Think big right? But if I think TOO big, I've got alot of white space and, there goes centering.

Chewy little problem <grin>. So how can we fix it friends?

Well . . . she's counting like a champ Altexis.

But she's off center. :rolleyes:

Each number/comma gif is
50 high
25 wide
so I set the parameters
100 high
200 wide
to allow for enough room.

How can I get her centered? I doubt too many people would believe that 1,000,023 people viewed my book auction. 😃

And part two of my question is quite ironic, actually. I use Netscape 4.78, so guess who had to load IEx 6.0 to see her counter. :mad:

Surely there must be a workaround to force those gifs to show up without a click in an older browser? Is PHP that new? (or am I that old, is the other question heh)

uurr... I am not THAT good with iframes...
but just try put this parameter inside the iframe tag
align="center"

No go. I tried both

<IFRAME align="center" frameborder="0" height="100" width="200"

and

<IFRAME align=center frameborder="0" height="100" width="200"

for that line and they just won't pull because I've assigned that width. 🙁

Is there any way to avoid assigning a fixed width? Someone somewhere must have encountered this at some point. 😉

yes... just ignore it
don't write about width at all!

or maybe this is as equal: width="100%"

Nope, no centering.

Although I did discover that you can eliminate some excess script:

still centers (off-centers, that is) and that must be because it is taking the centering instruction from the book graphic just above it, which is centered itself. :rolleyes:

I even tried cheating the browser by putting in a width of "25" to force it more to an absolute middle, and that got me . . . a slider. 😃 No graphics, because the slider buried them lol.

Maaaaaaan. What a nightmare! I can't believe how nasty this formatting deal is. I may just give up and left align it. I can't leave it sitting there, so obviously "not quite" centered. :mad: It looks amateurish. And even though I am, I don't want to be that obvious. :rolleyes:
