I installed some extra software from my linux cd's, afterwards I was presented with gnome as a desktop instead of KDE. Which I found rather odd and more than a little irritating.
How can I get KDE back?
On a totally seperate issue, is 'dump' the best application to make an exact disk image for backup purposes?
which linux distro??
Redhat 7.3
with RPM you uninstall and install packages,
to uninstall Gnome type (at a console):
rpm -e gnome
to install KDE type:
rpm -i kdebase-3.0.3-13.rpm
I think this is the latest release of rpm KDE package
Yeah, I understand how to load and unload packages. However, I never told the installer to uninstall KDE and install Gnome. As far as I know KDE is still on the system, all it has done is add gnome.
Is it not possible just to disable Gnome and enable KDE as the GUI?
It took a slightly holistic approach to find the relevant command, but that's Google for you.
The command 'switchdesk' let's you choose which desktop environment you want.
You can use the following command from shell:
start iceWM start KDE start Gnome
to select the window manager you want 🙂
You can also just click on the menu icon and logout. In the logout dialog you can change your session which will allow you to boot into KDE or Gnome whenever you want. Easy.

yes but only if you graphic login enabled 🙂 I never use graphic login for example
Look for something called switch-desk
