login status

HI am pretty new to PHP but learning. I've made a section of my site requiring user authentication. all has gone peachy (mostly), users register, login, lovely. What i want to do is say like

"<Username> is logged in"

now, when my membership data in the registration is the typical firstname, lastname, email, password, ID...

my question is how do i display my firstname session variable when someone is logegd in, otherwise say "Nobody is logged in". I've looked for tutorials about this but to no avail. Will be hitting Sam Teach yourself.. tonight, but any help or advice would be brilliant!

The easiest way to do this is to have a status column in your users table. Then, when your login script verifies the user it sets their status to 1, and set it back to 0 when they log out.

That way you have a simple - "SELECT name FROM user WHERE staus=1" query to display all users who are logged in.

P.S. If you are using a user defined session handler that uses a db for storing session data, you can use the session data to find out who is logged in.
