web statistics

I am working on developing a custom web statistics tool and information that I want to collect from the user(s) is how many times clicked a hyperlink. What would be a good way to do this? I plan on storing the information in mysql.

Many sites make a script that counts the clicks then sends them to the designated page. For example, you make a script that records the links address and adds the click count + 1 then forwards you. Lets say your script name was forward.php the link is normaly forward.php?http://www.domain.com It gets the url from the query string. I'm sure you've seen this before. I don't know how to code that though, maybe someone else does, but thats my suggestion.
