Hiding Files on the Server

Is it possible to store images, text files,... on a non web accesible part of the server, and once a user logs in a script can be written to show these files, for them to download or view online.

For example say the live site is a directory www/asite/

I want a directory www/secure/ that has files, lets say image1.jpg, image2.jpg, image3.jpg...

Once the user logs in they will have access to these files, but how do I display them to that user without pulling them into the live server space?

Any help would be great.

Take a look at passthru function. It does just that.

Like this for example:

$path = "$pathtononwww/image5.jpg";

header("Content-type: image/jpeg");
$fp=fopen($path, "r");
fpassthru($fp);
?>

You'd also have to set Apache's document root to be /www/asite/, so that it won't be able to access /www/secure/
