Can someone suggest a cheap or free PHP/MYSQL shopping cart system. I'm looking for something that will run on Linux and be very easy to install.

You can check out this open source solution.

    osCommerce

I just ran a across it a couple of weeks ago. It's writtten in php and uses MySql.

There is some documentation for it here:

    OSCdox

    HTH

phpShop @ phpShop.org also seems nice option

i would like to revive this thread....i'm also looking for a free open source PHP/MySQL e-commerce solution.

anyone here who has used one and can give a recommendation?

        what about http://www.zen-cart.com/ ?

it's for an NPO, and we are selling very few items...like a dozen, so it need not be a mega complex system.

<-- can vouch for zencart, I'd recommend it over OSC any day.

            Why is that?

OSC has been around a long time, and has morphed into what can only be called a big pot of spaghetti. The code is messy, hard to follow, upgrades are awful, and the default install doesn't have nearly the functionality of zencart. I haven't used OSC in a long time, and I know they've switched to the templating system.. so it might be a little better now. ZenCart has always been on the templating system (which allows you to upgrade without overwriting most of your mods) and they're installation process is an absolute breeze. Documentation is wonderful, the code is somewhat straightforward (note: somewhat, not completely), and the community is just as helpful (if not more so) than OSC. Plus mods like gift certificates and coupon discounts were already in place.

i'm also picking out a free PHP/MySQL cart. Zen cart is an option our host provides. anyone else to recommend it over Cubecart or OSCommerce?

I would also recommend ZenCart over OSC.

One recommendation I would make is to visit the Zen community, and download the latest version which is 1.2.7d
