sure why not, if you really want something to work and enough people agree with you it will work.
its like asking "will Linux compete agains Windows?" or "which is the best religion?"
Why assume that Microsoft will automatically dominate any market they enter. Just beacuase they rightly or wrongly dominate the operating system market doesnt mean they can use this as a lever to dominate everything else in the world of computing.
VB has never superseded Java, C, C++, PERL, Python, Tcl/TK, Ruby etc. etc. etc. All of these are alternatives. Choose and use your tools wisely.
