using php to handle 'forwarded' email

Hi guys

I am trying to figure out how to handle emails 'forwarded' into a php script by the mail server.

The server is set up to let all emails go into a php file, which in turn is supposed to grap email address, subject, message, etc and put it into a MySQL database.

But I have no idea where to start.

Can anyone help me out at all? 🙂

i just know of a solution with perl. -> mail2mysql

never heard of a php solution.

thank you for your fast reply 🙂 However - the email istn't stored on the server; it's simply forwarded to the php file, so I can't go into any files on the server to read the mails.

how do you receive your emails? Just by a html-form?
in this case you might use a simple insert-query with the form values.

I don't know much about how it works. I have simply input the path to a php file in the control panel to the web host.

I know that the files get to the php file as I would get a bouncing email if it didn't.

But it is like it doesn't RUN the php file because none of the things in the php file is done.

Do I have to do anything special to make it work when it's executed from the server instead of through a browser?

is php compiled as CGI binary or as module?
(dunno how to figure this out with

as far as I can tell out of the phpinfo() it should be compiled as a binary
I am not 100% sure about that. I set it up through a web interface. But if I type in a php file not found it returns the email telling me the file is not found. As it doesn't do that now, I believe it works?

the problem is the first thing: PHP needs to be compiled as CGI binary - so it can't work on your server!

Use the perl program 😉

Here's the script: mail2mysql

first check if your mails are stored in a file on the server. on our server the file for new mails is called "Mail" and is located in the root directory of our account.
