Can PHP 4.2 now completely replace Javascript?

Hi,

I remember reading about two months ago, I can't remember if it was on this or the PHP.net site and I can't find the article, but what I remember was an article which basically said with the release of PHP 4.2, that PHP can now do everything that Javascript can do, such as create custom navigation menus, menu flyouts, dynamic content, stuff like that. Is this true? If so can anyone point me to either that article or documentation which explains this?

The exact quote I do remember was that the author said that with the release of PHP 4.2, you can now "kiss javascript goodbye"

I'm new to programming and if PHP can do everything that Javascript can do, my feeling is why learn two languages when one will do the job.

I am not sure of the article you're referring to. Javascript is client side and PHP is server side, and each has specific things it can and cannot do. The two can be complimentary languages, but to say one replaces another is a misunderstanding. Examine what type of site you want to develop and then decide on the language.

You must have been misinformed!

Javascript is (mostly) a client-side scripting language, whereas PHP is completely server-side.
The two work great together, and often you need both to achieve certain functionality.

js is a fully fledged server side langauge...mostly used with ASP pages where you can have the choice of VBScript or JS...yes they can all do the same things...serverside...js is the language of choice for any clientside interaction such as prescreening of data input, redirection based on drop down menu choices etc...

php i find is simpler but that may just be a use issue, as i teneded to use vbscript for server side processing
