Using PHP filesystem commands for FTP "url"

I've heard that you can use PHP's filesystem commands for accessing files and dirs on an FTP server - could someone explain how to go about doing this? Do I still have to use the ftp_connect and ftp_login commands? Is there a good tutorial anywhere? I've had problems with some of the ftp commands (notably ftp_rawlist) and wanted to use PHP's functions instead.

You can use fopen to open a file through FTP. (There is an example here) But you won't be able to get a list of files in a directory (because opendir() doesn't work with remote files).

Thanks for the info. I guess it won't work for me, since I'm trying to write a simple FTP browser for one of my apps. I appreciate your help nonetheless!
