Wrapping in Text Area

I have a textarea that is stored in a database and then displayed later. The problem is that the spaces and returns aren't returned properly. Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried wrap="virtual" and wrap="physical" but neither one worked.

I've used wrap=soft with good luck. I don't remember where I found the reference.

i guess you should use 'hard' instead of 'soft':

do you have to do anything special when you print it? I tried soft and it stored it in the database correctly but still didn't display correctly.

give us some more detail of how its failing. You'll probably have to use a regex to substitute spaces and returns.

When I select it from the database(not through the webpage) I can see the spaces and line breaks. But when I print it to the webpage the spaces and line breaks are not there.

I now used CSS around the output style="white-space: pre;" and it displays spaces and line break properly but the first line is always indented about an inch. Also now if the person just types one long line without ever hitting enter then when it is displayed it is only one line and streches out very long.

You can see what I am talking about by going to http://www.iuslug.org/~jkruer01/ When you create a post there is a text area that you enter the message into. This is what I am having problems with. You can use
user name: "test"

password: "test"

to post for now if you want.

What is a regex?

Take a look at the functions nl2br and wordwrap .

Thanks a lot for those function. I used the nl2br function and it worked great. Do you know of any similar functions that replace spaces with   or something similar to display them on a webpage?

There's no built-in function, but I guess you could do a simple str_replace:

Try
print str_replace(' ', ' ', "A b");
