listing image sequences?

I would like to be able to list the files in a directory, but concatenate (correct word?) each image sequence on a single line. Ie:

image.001.tga
image.002.tga
image.003.tga
image.004.tga
image.005.tga

..would become..

image.<001-005>.tga

Not sure where to begin. Your help is appreciated..

First of all, do you know how to fetch files in a directory ? If not have a look there and particularly here

Well then for each file, I need to know a little bit more about your requirement. Do you have exactly the same pattern for each image file. I mean is it only the number that can change image.xyz.tga ? ? or do you have different name or different extension like image.xyz.gif or toto.xyz.bmp

If the pattern is always the same, you will want to use this and if it's not you will prefer using Regular expression

The file extension changes. Could be .cin, .tga, .sgi, etc... Even the number padding can be different. (could be 2, 3, 4, 5 digit padding, etc..)
