default directory for mkdir?

i'm trying to use mkdir, but am having a few problems.

If i just specify a name, it creates the folder in the directory of my x: drive. I can't see where this is specified in php.ini, my php is installed on the G drive, and i'm working in x:\php\work.

If i try and tell it to mkdir("/php/work/name") then it says i dont have permission, even though i've given write access to the work directory in IIS.

What am i missing? I though that it would try and create the directory where I was running the php from, not (apparently randomly) choose the x drive!? I've tried to look through php.net but i cant see anything that i've not tried before.

PS - I've just noticed that I can create a directory anywhere on my system (eg c:\ or c:\windows), providing that it's not in IIS (ie if I share it on IIS then it suddenly wont let me create folders there, despite me setting all the tick boxes like write, script access etc. Is there some setting that I'm missing perhaps? If someone could talk me through all the places I have to fix settings I'd be extremely grateful
