form values produce 'Array' not variable

Hello,

I've got a form set up (thanks to help from the forum 😉 ) that holds checkboxes created in an array using values from a table so that users are able to select multiple areas and then from those areas other variables defined by the form.

The part I'm having issues with is on the form:

$sql = "SELECT * FROM areamaster order by am_title";

							$result = mysql_query($sql);

                            while($myrow = mysql_fetch_array($result))
                            {

                                    $locations=$locations."<input class=search type='checkbox' name='l_area[]' value='" .  $myrow["am_title"] . "'>$myrow[am_title]\n";

	 }

                            echo $locations;

---

and the receiving page:

$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM listings WHERE l_area IN ('" . implode("','", $_POST['l_area']) . "' AND
l_active=1 AND l_status='$l_status' ORDER BY l_date asc limit $off, $limit");

The test echo I have for $l_area returns the word 'Array' and if I echo $locations I get nothing.

Can someone tell me the obvious thing this newbie is missing?

Firstly, have you inspected the html source for your form page?

I'd suspect that this snippet:

value='" . $myrow["am_title"] . "'

is partly to blame. use single quotes not double quotes. ie value='" . $myrow['am_title'] . "'

I also tend to do my array manipulation prior to the sql being created. That way, you can echo the variable created to screen to ensure it is being formed correctly.

I usually use the [" "] vs [' '] (for no other reason than bad habit - I've been told that the single quotes make the code process faster? ) and when I changed it as per your suggestion I got the same results.

For your second suggestion:

I think that I have done that - The statement I used to echo the variable is placed at the top of the processing page, before the query:

Your search for $l_type listings in $l_area for under $$l_price produced the following results.

(I also tried $locations instead of $l_area here with no luck)

Am I still not understanding what you have suggested or is there more to this that I need to add?

Try this -

$l_area_list = "'" . implode("','", $_POST['l_area']) . "'";
$sql = "SELECT * FROM listings WHERE l_area IN ($l_area_list) AND 
l_active=1 AND l_status='$l_status' ORDER BY l_date asc limit $off, $limit";

$result = mysql_query($sql) or die('Query failed.<br>MySQL Error: ' . mysql_error() . '<br>Query: ' . $sql);

In your code (above), you closed the implode parenthesis but not the in parenthesis. Try this

$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM listings WHERE l_area IN ('" . implode("','", $_POST['l_area']) . "') AND
 l_active=1 and l_status='$l_status' ORDER BY l_date ASC LIMIT $off, $limit") or die(mysql_error());

I used a combination of the

$l_area_list = implode(',', $_POST['l_area']);

to declare the $l_area at the beginning of the page where the results are echoed, and used

SELECT * FROM listings WHERE l_area IN ('" . implode("','", $_POST['l_area']) . "')

Note the ) added - where had I left the parenthesis out would have driven me crazy had I gotten to the point where everything else was working except for that for that piece for no apparent reason.

Using the two separately didn't do it for me - this may be the round-about way to do it but it meets my standards for now.
