I was wondering if anybody could tell me how foreign keys would influence the performance of a database. I know it does a lot for the integrity of the data, but can it slow down inserts and updates?

The how of is that with foreign keys, referenced tables will need to be checked to see if insert/delete is valid. Proper use of indexes here is key...
It does not impede search performance.
