mail address to links

Does anyone know the correct sysntax of the arguments of the function ereg_replace which convert the email addresses to links without using any type of tag like [MAIL]address[/MAIL].

an email address is [e-mail]
and an email link is

<a href="mailto:[e-mail]">write to mr bean</a>

so what's the problem ? !

if i write [e-mail] then the link is ganarated by itself so what is the function is used to create that link itself?

Ok I see
something to start with :

ereg("^[_a-z0-9-]+(\.[_a-z0-9-]+)*@[a-z0-9-]+(\.[a-z0-9-]+)+$", $var); 
//return 1 if $var is an email address

But it doesn't work with email addresses within a text...
$var = "[e-mail]" --> 1
$var = "write to [e-mail] or [e-mail]" --> does not work

so you will have to find something to isolate words in a text
but I'm pretty sure you can find something in the tutorial of this site
