Could you list a sample of the data in the houses table. Just the top 5 rows is good. I'm thinking that DISTINCT is working just fine. So... Press711 did steer you right in the thread you referenced.

If you have data like this...
id - area
1 - uptown
2 - uptown
3 - downtown
4 - downtown

then the query "SELECT DISTINCT id, area... " will return all rows. So my next question is, what other data is in that table. A short table dump would help us to see what's what 🙂

You are correct with your table data.
It is set up like so,

id - areas - towns - zip

1 - uptown - new york - ABC1
2 - uptown - chicago - XYZ4
3 - downtown - toronto - AAA7
4 - downtown - London - DEF8

etc....

The current drop down can be seen here http://www.stevesims.com/menutest.php - I would like to have three drop downs in total, one for areas, one for towns and one for zip codes.

( If a menu is left with the selection as 'Choose One' then all available data would be reported for that field in the results page.)

I see what you're saying now, I think. For the dynamic list population, you kinda need all possible results from the get-go.

Because of this (and the type of data I usually work with), I haven't opted for the javascript solution.
