Problems using mail();

I don't want to run a mailserver from home...
I have tried putting the php.ini SMTP server as my ISP, but that needs authentification so it won't work. Anyone got any ideas?

If you are using a UK based ISP none of them run authentication on SMTP. They only allow internal connections to their mail servers - so assuming you are connected to the net through them you are therefore 'internal'.

Well...Strange...I get 'Warning: Server error in c:\phpdev\www\forgottenpass.php on line 42 and line 42 is the mail one... It works if I upload it to a paid host, I just don't have the money to use a paid host...So I'm hosting from home and its not working. Any ideas why?

How are you hosting from home? BT Broadband?

Actually, Freeserve Broadband. Yes your thinking 'They don't allow it' but I have phoned them up and they said O.K.

open the php.ini

search for

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = yourSMTP like mail.anything.com

may that's the problem.

I have used php on my laptop with "mail.freeserve.net" as the smtp server over their broadband and it worked a treat.

Thanks! It appears that I was using smtp.freeserve.com instead of mail.freeserve.net, Freeserve made a mistake on their homepage! Woops! Thanks again!
