email verification

hi,
im currently using this function to check if an email is valid:

function isemail($var) {
	if(ereg("[A-Za-z0-9_-]+([\.]{1}[A-Za-z0-9_-]+)*@[A-Za-z0-9-]+([\.]{1}[A-Za-z0-9-]+)+", $var)) {
		return TRUE;
	} else {
		return FALSE;
	}
}

i have noticed that people can use emails
like [e-mail]
my question is how do i have to modify the script so that only the format [e-mail] would be valid (only one dot after the @, but infinite in front of the @)

Just a idea... wouldn't it work to first SPLIT() the addy on the @ into an array of two elements, then you could examine each side of the email address independently.

I dunno, maybe that's a dumb idea 😕

Are you really sure you want to do this? as far as I know email addresses may contain subdomains, and I would not want to reject someone with a valid email address.

Well, if you are sure, simply remove the last + (then you can remove the last ( and ) as well, and you definitely can remove {1}, too).
